Thumbay Hospital Ajman

A 29-year-old female Nigerian patient who approached Thumbay Hospital, Ajman following her inability to swallow food and water was completely cured after a Laparoscopic Surgery performed by the hospital’s bariatric surgeon.

The patient, Mrs. Judith Onyine had approached different hospitals since 8 months ago when she first started experiencing difficulty in swallowing. She found no relief in the treatments, prompting her to look for options outside the country. Browsing the internet for hospitals in the UAE, she was impressed by the positive reviews of Thumbay Hospital, and decided to approach the hospital.

Judith was examined by Dr. Tamer Safaan, Specialist – Bariatric Surgery, who diagnosed her case as Cardiac Achalasia. “Cardiac Achalasia is a rare condition occurring in 1 out of 100,000 people. It is a disorder of the esophagus (food pipe) in which its nerve cells and muscles do not function properly. This in turn causes difficulties in swallowing, as well as coughing and breathing problems if the food gets into the lungs,” explained Dr. Tamer Safaan.

Dr. Tamer Safaan decided to perform laparoscopic Heller’s Cardiomyotomy surgery to improve Judith’s condition. The surgery lasted one-and-a-half hours. “The surgery was done laparoscopically, through 5 ports. This kind of procedure is complex because it involves working very close to vital structures like aorta and the left and right pleura,” the doctor said.

The patient was discharged 3 days after the surgery. She is now able to swallow food and water effortlessly
