Terrace Restaurant, part of the chain of multi-cuisine restaurants from Thumbay Group’s hospitality division, launched the new Karavalli cuisine at their outlet in Rolla, Sharjah. The chief guest of the launch ceremony was Mr. Nazeer Hussain P., Director – Finance & Budget and Board Member of Thumbay Group along with celebrity guest, Malayalam actress and RJ Ms. Meera Nandan.

Mr. Nazeer and Ms. Meera were introduced to the Karavalli cuisine, a food menu inclusive of dishes from the coastal area of Southwest India. They congratulated Mr. Farhad C., Director – Hospitality Division & Board Member of Thumbay Group for initiating the launch of this distinctive cuisine to the food loving communities based around Sharjah. Mr. Farhad C. explained: “Terrace is an off-shoot of Thumbay Group and has international cuisines on their culinary platter. Taking the destination theme to the next level, we have launched a new cuisine called Karavalli. Essentially, this is cuisine from South India in which we have selected a few key recipes from Kerala, Mangalore, and Goa.  We want this to be a destination restaurant in Sharjah where we cater to the entire mix of nationalities here in the UAE.”

With a core focus on authentic South Indian food that is normally served back home, Mr. Farhad said: “We want to bring the culture back and infuse a homemade feel to it. As Rolla is densely populated with South Indians, we opted to launch a cuisine that caters specifically to this group.”

As a well-known brand name, Terrace is rebranding itself to focus on a specific cuisine, revealed Mr. Farhad, and added: “Instead of generalizing ourselves to an international menu, we want to take it cuisine-wise as a destination restaurant. Within this theme, our next outlet to be launched in Ajman will be Terrace Grills which will have a special focus on grills and barbeque cuisine, keeping in mind the Arab, Indian, and Pakistani communities there. We also have an upcoming Terrace Pinoy which will focus on Filipino cuisine in Satwa, Dubai, catering to the expats from the Philippines.”

The National Occupational Standard Development Experts from National Qualification Authority, Government of UAE visited Gulf Medical University, Ajman on March 05^th 2018.

Gulf Medical University greeted the NQA team Adele McLean, Yulia Kolpakova and Denise Riini National Occupational Standard Development Experts. The purpose of the visit was to develop National Occupational Standards for the Medical Tourism, Nursing and Medical Imaging sectors.

The NQA team had in-depth discussions and exchanged thoughts with the Honourable Chancellor Prof. Hossam Hamdy and Vice Provost Prof. Manda Venkatramana for collaboration on Medical Education Excellence.  Prof Hossam Hamdy assured the NQA team that GMU shall provide expertise as a specialized medical university in developing medical competency standards for health professions in the United Arab Emirates.

The GMU team was led by Dr. Anil Bankar, Assistant Professor – Medical Tourism in coordination with Dr.Dilip Giri, Director- Institutional Planning and Research and Dr. Praveen Kumar, Dean- College of Health Sciences.

The NQA team toured  GMU campus and visited the Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare,  the Thumbay Institute for Precision Medicine and Thumbay Labs. In the second session, Dr. Anil Bankar, Assistant Professor – Medical Tourism who is also a member of Sector Advisory Committee of NQA delivered a talk on Medical Tourism Education.  The team was very impressed with the state-of-the-art facilities and were overwhelmed with the generosity and expertise during their visit.

Attended by a huge crowd of over 3000, the students from 80+ nationalities celebrated their cultural brilliance with costumes, food and performances.

Gulf Medical University (GMU), the leading medical university in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group celebrated its annual ‘Global Day 2018’ on 16^th March 2018. More than 3000 attendees including the students and staff of the University as well as their families and friends gathered at the University grounds to join the celebrations. Celebrated every year, the GMU Global Day seeks to admire the unity in cultural diversity of GMU’s student community hailing from over 80 nationalities. The event gives the students an opportunity to display the essence of their ethnicities and cultures.

Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the Chancellor of GMU was the chief guest of GMU Global Day 2018. The celebrations were inaugurated by Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Vice Provost – Academics, in the presence of the Deans of GMU’s colleges. Accompanied by the Vice Provost and Deans, the Chancellor toured the country pavilions where students had exhibited the food and costumes, as well as other exhibits relevant to their culture and history. Admiring the students’ efforts, he said that the annual Global Day was an occasion to celebrate the togetherness of GMU’s students and staff, emphasizing the University’s ‘Unity in Diversity’.

The GMU campus gleamed with colors and adornments as individual countries set up their pavilions to display their ethnic costumes and cuisines. Students were dressed in their respective traditional attires, and performed their traditional music and dance forms on stage, entertaining the audience with some great displays of talent.  Various competitions were held, such as selection of the best pavilion, food, hospitality, teamwork, country performances, as well as talent and fashion shows.

Individual pavilions were set up for the following countries: Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, India, Egypt and Yemen. Prizes were awarded to the winners of competitions in various categories.

Thumbay Hospitals, the largest network of private academic hospitals in the Middle East region owned by Thumbay Group, as well as the Thumbay Clinic and Thumbay Hospital Day Care networks observed the ‘Earth Hour’ on 24th March 2018 by symbolically dimming their non-essential lightings for one hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Located at Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain in the UAE and Hyderabad-India, all the hospitals and clinics under Thumbay Group’s healthcare division participated in the initiative which was held as part of the Group’s CSR drive. Doctors, staffs, patients and visitors at the hospitals and clinics participated in the event.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group said, “Climate change is a global phenomenon which threatens to endanger our planet. By going dark for an hour, we have expressed our support for this annual global event to emphasize the importance of climate action.”

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, on the last Saturday of March, as a symbol for their commitment to the planet.

Thumbay Hospitals in Ajman and Fujairah, part of the network of academic hospitals under Thumbay Group’s Healthcare Division, were honored by His Excellency Dr. Amin Al Amiri, Asst. Undersecretary for Public Health Policy and License Sector in the UAE Ministry of Health, for their efforts in pursuing and attaining international quality accreditation in patient care.

The private ceremony held at Roda Al Bustan Hotel, Dubai, was led by H.E Dr Amin Al Amiri and a delegation of MOH officials from the health policy and licensing sector, with the audience compromising of top hospitals, medical centers and specialty clinics of the Northern Emirates.

Thumbay Hospital Ajman and Fujairah were commended among top hospitals from the private sector licensed under the MOH that were continually working to raise the standards of quality and was therefore selected to be honored at the prestigious event.

The awards were received by Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President – Healthcare Division and Board Member of Thumbay Group. Thumbay Group was the only healthcare group that received two awards at the ceremony, highlighting their efforts in providing world-class healthcare.

Thumbay Group’s Healthcare Division opened a new Thumbay Clinic in Kalba, Sharjah, on 29^th March 2018, expanding its growing network of family clinics in the UAE. A Thumbay Pharmacy outlet under the group’s Retail Division was also opened adjacent to the new clinic.

Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group was the chief guest of the opening function. Also present were Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay – Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group, and other members of Thumbay Group Board.

The group plans to open at least six more clinics and several more pharmacies, as part of the expansion plans this year. Clinics and pharmacies are at various stages of development in locations including Deira Waterfront, Dragon Mart and Bur Dubai in Dubai and Abu Shagara and Rahmaniya Mall in Sharjah.  This is in addition to the new projects coming up in the Gulf Medical University campus in Al Jurf, Ajman: the 500-bed Thumbay Hospital – the biggest private academic hospital in the region, Thumbay Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Centre – an advance rehabilitation center and Thumbay Dental Hospital – a 60-chair dental hospital in Al Jurf – Ajman, scheduled to be operational under the Healthcare Division in the next few months.

Centrally located in Kalba at Al Wahda Street, the new clinic has specialist doctors in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dental, General Medicine and X – ray, complete with laboratory services. Gulf Medical University – Ajman, the leading private medical university in the Middle East region has entered into strategic partnership with University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (UA-MEZCOPH), USA, with the aim of significantly developing public health education in the Middle East region.

Commenting on the partnership with UA-MEZCOPH, Prof. Hossam Hamdy said that GMU was proud to tie up with one of the leading universities in the United States. “We hope this is just the beginning of a wider and broader collaboration. We are a specialized medical University, which extends the potential of collaboration to different disciplines. The professional ties between these two universities will continue for many years to come,” he said.

Experts opined that AI would significantly help doctors and healthcare professionals of the future, increasing the efficiency of diagnoses by improving speed and accuracy. AI would also help generate a lot of data, which would be of great help to preventive medicine, by detecting pre-symptoms signs of patients and even addressing chronic conditions. The way medical students derive their training will also be impacted, and future medical professionals will rely a lot on AI enabled technology and equipment. Speakers at the conference also said that this new trend would open up a world of opportunities for technology companies innovating in AI.
